EMBARK Program

Embark

The EMBARK Program is a free mentoring and peer support initiative designed and facilitated by Build Like a Girl, in collaboration with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) ACT.

Target Audience: Women and gender-diverse individuals in their first five years in the construction industry (including apprentices, trade workers, cadets, site engineers, machine operators, and labourers)

Core Goal: To reduce early-career isolation, support retention, build professional networks, and guide participants through the realities of working on-site.

One-on-One Mentoring: Participants are paired with an experienced industry mentor for guidance, advice, and regular catch-ups outside of scheduled sessions.

Monthly Group Sessions: Interactive sessions covering practical and personal development topics, such as:

  • Resilience training
  • Managing money and finances
  • Bystander and intervention training (including mental health and check-in programs like I Got You)
  • Handling tough conversations and fitting in on-site
  • Guest panel speakers and real-talk industry insights.

Peer Network (“Find Your Tribe”): A supportive community designed to connect early-career women navigating male-dominated trades and construction environments.

Enact Real Change

Build Like A Girl is a not-for-profit organisation that develops collaborative pre-apprenticeship and entry level programs, helping participants to find employment in a fulltime apprenticeship or trainee skilled role, as well as offering an inclusive and welcoming space for all women in trades.

We will then continue mentoring, coaching, case management, networking and support for every individual.

Our team will identify women in need of employment, support them through pre-apprenticeship training, resilience training and accredited Certificate III trade skills to grow confidence and understanding of trade opportunities. It will then assist them to access jobs with employer partners and enter employment with ongoing mentoring and a wide range of support.
