The Unconscious Bias training model is delivered in the following way:
Program Outline (3.5 hours)
- Understanding unconscious bias
- What are conscious and unconscious bias and how they form
- Implicit bias vs. stated values
- Bias in high-pressure, hierarchical, and safety-critical environments
- Understanding the impact of bias in the workplace
- How bias influences hiring, task allocation, and communication
- How bias affects collaboration, leadership and safety
- How bias creates psychosocial hazards and undermines workplace values and culture
- Applying emotional intelligence
- Self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills
- Using EI to manage team dynamics, give feedback, and manage conflict
Activities:
- Affinity mapping: Reflect on and examine assumptions in the construction industry linked to gender, age and background.
- Bias reflection and group discussion: Share experiences from participants’ own careers and the insights they provide.
- Simulated scenarios: Address workplace case studies to practice and build confidence in managing high pressure situations, diverse communication styles, and safety-critical decisions.
Learner Outcomes:
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define unconscious bias and its impact on workplace decisions and relationships in the construction industry
- Describe the difference between implicit bias and stated organisational values
- Explain how emotional intelligence (EI) skills improve communication, conflict resolution and teamwork
