Unconscious Bias Training

Founded in 2020 by Jo Farrell and backed by 30 years of lived construction experience, Build Like A Girl has been Nationally recognised for work in the industry to achieve greater gender balance and parity, as well as contribute to more healthy and productive businesses and sites.

Our training is delivered with our Registered Training Organisation partner Wisdom Learning, a female owned and operated business.

Wisdom Learning is a national award-winning specialist Learning and Development provider based in Canberra delivering services across Australia to a range of industries and sectors. Combined we have more than two decades of experience providing outcomes focussed capability building solutions and particular expertise in behaviour-changing psychosocial training programs to clients such as Canberra Hospital, the ACT Government, and Downer Professional Services.

The Unconscious Bias training model is delivered in the following way:

Program Outline (3.5 hours)

  1. Understanding unconscious bias
    • What are conscious and unconscious bias and how they form
    • Implicit bias vs. stated values
    • Bias in high-pressure, hierarchical, and safety-critical environments
  2. Understanding the impact of bias in the workplace
    • How bias influences hiring, task allocation, and communication
    • How bias affects collaboration, leadership and safety
    • How bias creates psychosocial hazards and undermines workplace values and culture
  3. Applying emotional intelligence
    • Self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills
    • Using EI to manage team dynamics, give feedback, and manage conflict

Activities:

  1. Affinity mapping: Reflect on and examine assumptions in the construction industry linked to gender, age and background.
  2. Bias reflection and group discussion: Share experiences from participants’ own careers and the insights they provide.
  3. Simulated scenarios: Address workplace case studies to practice and build confidence in managing high pressure situations, diverse communication styles, and safety-critical decisions.

Learner Outcomes:

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define unconscious bias and its impact on workplace decisions and relationships in the construction industry
  • Describe the difference between implicit bias and stated organisational values
  • Explain how emotional intelligence (EI) skills improve communication, conflict resolution and teamwork

Enact Real Change

Build Like A Girl is a not-for-profit organisation that develops collaborative pre-apprenticeship and entry level programs, helping participants to find employment in a fulltime apprenticeship or trainee skilled role, as well as offering an inclusive and welcoming space for all women in trades.

We will then continue mentoring, coaching, case management, networking and support for every individual.

Our team will identify women in need of employment, support them through pre-apprenticeship training, resilience training and accredited Certificate III trade skills to grow confidence and understanding of trade opportunities. It will then assist them to access jobs with employer partners and enter employment with ongoing mentoring and a wide range of support.
