How to have tough conversations – promotions and pay rises

Asking for a promotion or pay rise can be one of the most uncomfortable conversations we can have with an employer. We feel awkward bringing it up, aren’t sure how to ask, or we’re afraid we’ll sound greedy or like we’re overestimating our worth. We have been conditioned by culture and societal expectations that talking about money is “wrong” and expect our employer to see our value and offer the pay rise or promotion. Sadly, this is not the norm, and we need to advocate for ourselves to ensure we are fairly compensated and gaining the career advancements that we desire.
