Apprenticeships
Step 1 Research
Step 1 - Research and decide
Before you start making career and training decisions, it is important to discover the variety of occupations available through the Australian Apprenticeships scheme and think about which industries and jobs might suit you best to help ensure your success.
When making important decisions like this one, it’s helpful to talk to family and friends who know you well - they may have helpful insights into your strengths and interests.
However, your most important guide is your own goals and dreams, so think about:
interests or experience that will support your entry into a particular career
any limitations on what you can do and where you can travel for work
the occupation that excites you the most.
Step 2 Learn & Prepare
Learn and prepare
Now you have chosen an apprenticeship or trade role, find the answers to these questions to guide your next move:
Do I already have the skills and knowledge to start my apprenticeship or Trade role?
Take a quick Literacy and Numeracy Quiz(External website, Opens in new window) to see how strong your existing skills are.
Which organisations will be part of my apprenticeship or Trade role, and what do they do?
Step 3 Find an Employer
Step 3 – Find an employer
Once you have decided on your target occupation and which qualification you will need to complete, it is time to look for a job.
There are a few ways to do this:
search job sites(External website, Opens in new window) that advertise apprenticeships
contact employers in your chosen industry and ask if they would hire you as an apprentice or trainee
find opportunities through a Group Training Organisation(External website, Opens in new window) (GTO)
search for an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) Provider(External website, Opens in new window) and register on their jobs board
look for vacant apprentice roles advertised in your local paper
if you are still at school, talk to your careers advisor
if you are classified as a job seeker, contact your local employment services provider(External website, Opens in new window).
To increase your chances of success, you may need to create or revise your résumé.
Step 4 Find an ANP
Step 4 – Find an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP)
AASN providers will help you get started and work with you and your employer through the term of your apprenticeship or traineeship. AASN services are provided free of charge and are funded by the Australian Government.
Your AASN provider will help you to:
register for your apprenticeship or traineeship
understand what is involved and how to succeed
choose a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)(External website, Opens in new window) and understand the role of a Training Plan
sign the Training Contract
access additional assistance if you have special needs
advise you on any available financial assistance.
